Barrington, Rhode Island is located within the Narragansett Bay watershed and is part of what is known as the East Bay region. This region, which is comprised of the towns of Barrington, Bristol, East Providence and Warren, is steeped in British and Colonial heritage. European settlers first arrived here in the mid-17th century, where tensions with the local Wapanoag Indians led to the outbreak of King Philip’s War in 1675. In 1667, the land that is now Barrington was incorporated as a part of the town of Swansea; religious differences drove a formal separation in 1711, and Barrington was incorporated independently in 1717.
Barrington is surrounded by water on three sides and has more waterfront land than any other town in the East Bay. Although Barrington has several manufacturing establishments, it is best known for its beautiful homes and country estates. At Nayatt Point, in the southwestern part of the town, is a beautiful summer colony on the shores of Narragansett Bay.
Barrington is also home to the Rhode Island Country Club, whose golf course is rated among the best in the east. The Barrington River offers safe anchorage for a large number of motor and sailing craft, providing convenient access to the broad reaches of Narragansett Bay. There is a 14-mile bike path which runs through all four East Bay communities and offers an unparalleled view of Narragansett Bay to cyclists, walkers, joggers and rollerbladers.
Opportunities abound to walk, fish, bike, boat, bird watch, golf, swim, and enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery in Rhode Island. All things considered, Barrington is a wonderful place in which to live and work, raise a family and enjoy New England’s rich heritage. For other town tours visit http://www.virtualhomes.com .
