Because they are run by liberals (Dems). It goes hand in hand.
It’s not that one is the cause of the other, it’s that they are both caused by something else: having Dems in charge.

Why, the beachballs must cause ice cream!

Only 2 out of that top 5 legalized gay marriage. Fail.

Stands to reason to me.
States that oppose gay marriage often have large conservative bases, the same conservative bases that also are anti-taxes and usually vote as such.
Vice-versa for states that legalized gay marriage- a more liberal voting base, generally that also means more open to taxes.

A high income tax burden has nothing to do with giving people the rights that are accorded others.

Asking that question is like saying why Why do the states that permit gay marriage have longer coastlines. One is not associated with the other. It is interesting to note that the top 5 states in regard to tax burden, Vermont, Hawaii, Connecticut, Minnesota, New Jersey are all states with high median household income. Also, good to note that Vermont (1st) and Connecticut (3rd), the only two of the top five tax burden states that allow gay marriage are two of the highest educated states in the union. The other states that allow gay marriage, Massachusetts (2nd), Iowa (9th), are also in the top 10 smartest states. So the only logical conclusion to me is that education equals acceptance. Tolerance is a quality of a wise mind. It isn’t that far of a stretch to say that the reverse might also be true, something to think about.

That really doesn’t mean anything unless you look deeper into the research. There could be other reasons why they have disproportionately high personal tax burdens.
Causation does not always equal correlations. Just because they are related to each other does not mean one causes the other. A common example of this is that when more ice cream is bought and eaten more drownings occur. In a sense this is true. More ice cream is bought during the summer months and during the summer months more people tend to swim so thus there are more people who drown.
So your statement could be true for your stated reason or it could just be a coincidence. More information is needed than one article.
